about

Hanna Tuulikki and Tommy Perman’s 'Echo in the Dark' EP accompanies a new set of dance music tracks and touring outdoor bat rave inspired by and featuring bat echolocation sounds collected with communities in Arbroath, Angus, and across the UK.

Launching in summer 2022 at Hospitalfield in Arbroath, 'Echo in the Dark' is a major new collaborative work initiated by British-Finnish artist, composer and performer Hanna Tuulikki exploring the interconnections of bat echolocation and dance music as a model for ecological coexistence. Through music and rave, the artist invites audiences to tune into the more-than-human rhythms and frequencies of bats, including those gathered by Scottish communities in Angus. The beats and melodies of the music are made entirely from recordings of bat echolocation calls fused with the sounds of Tuulikki’s voice. Conceived as a love letter to dance music, 'Echo in the Dark' will culminate in a series of silent bat raves which premiere at Hospitalfield on the 8th, 9th and 10th September 2022. Find out more and book tickets online.

'Echo in the Dark' features new electronic music created by the artist in collaboration with music producer Tommy Perman, with each track focusing on a different bat species from the British Isles, using samples of their ultrasonic calls combined with the human voice to create an ephemeral human-bat hybrid world. The music also features a special guest appearance from renowned philosopher Timothy Morton who has written extensively about ecological awareness.

The project was commissioned by Hospitalfield with support from Creative Scotland, the National Heritage Lottery Fund, PRS for Music Foundation and the Silvia Waddilove Trust.
